The European Union's Transport Commissioner wants rail companies to separate their passenger and freight train business from their railway network management activities by 2023 to make it easier for new entrants to compete, a German newspaper reported.
So obviously not a requirement in 1993, eh Mr Major?

Shoots foot
Oh dear - the Tories grand plan to replace additional runways at Heathrow with a new High Speed line is already coming off the rails.
According to today's Financial Times several speakers at last week's Integrating High-Speed Rail conference poured scorn on the plans.
Not least because BAA revealed that only 'three per cent of the 480,000 annual take-offs and landings at Heathrow were for flights to, or from, Leeds or Manchester', with none at all for Birmingham.

Proof is in the pudding
Good news for David Cameron and his commitment to integrated transport.
Conservative Guildford Borough Council has voted to end a free shuttle service linking railway and bus stations with the town's centre.
In a delightful attempt to shift the blame for their lack of vision onto the Disability Taliban, the council claimed that free disabled and elderly travel now made the bus service unnecessary.
Other piss-poor excuses included rising fuel costs.
"It simply doesn't make sense to use public money to continue to subsidise a free service in these circumstances, especially as escalating fuel costs would make the service even more expensive than the present £90,000 a year." said Councillor Jenny Wicks.

Fares freeze?

David Cameron unveiled the Tories "Blue/Green Charter" today.
In his speech Cameron lamented "packed and expensive trains". In almost the very next sentance he identified the need for "High speed rail to connect the country quickly".
The Fact Compiler is very excited. Is this a Tory promise not to increase fares to pay for HS2? Somehow we doubt it.
